Hibernation...?

TOKYO (AP) — A man who went missing in western Japan survived in wintry weather without food and water for over three weeks by falling into a state of "hibernation," doctors said.

Mitsutaka Uchikoshi had almost no pulse, his organs had all but shut down and his body temperature was a chilly 71 degrees Fahrenheit when he was discovered on Rokko mountain in late October, 24 days after he went missing in the area, according to doctors who treated him at the nearby Kobe City General Hospital.

I've often wondered, can we induce this type of thing on purpose?

How did this turn out? Did he lose any body parts or body functions? And what exactly did they mean by "wintry weather"? How much in the way of clothes and supplies did he start out with? Without these answers I'm not so sure that it was "hibernation" as much as just slowly succumbing to exposure and they found him at the last minute.

His body temperature is thought to have plunged as he lay in frosty weather of about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, greatly slowing down his metabolism.

"(Uchikoshi) fell into a state similar to hibernation and many of his organs slowed, but his brain was protected," said Dr. Shinichi Sato, head of the hospital's emergency unit. "I believe his brain capacity has recovered 100%."...

The doctors think it was hibernation.
He turned out fine. No loss of any organ or part.

We have done something similar with dogs and pigs.

On 20 January 2006, doctors from the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston announced they had placed pigs in suspended animation with a similar technique. The pigs were anaesthetised and major blood loss was induced. After the pigs lost about half their blood the remaining blood was replaced with a chilled saline solution. As the body temperature reached 10 °C (50 °F) the damaged blood vessel was repaired and the blood was returned. The method was tested 200 times with a 90% success rate

All this is all well and good but it's the zombies that worry me. I mean, Tai Chi doesn't work and you have to shoot them in the head. Plus there's are millions of them.

Taijiquan works great for zombies!
That is what sword is for, after all.
