Controlling fear/controlling anger/staying calm when it all happens. Somehow this reminds me of practicing meditation.
Indeed. Mabu, drills, moving postures might be enough for some, but I need seated meditation too.

This is something I can relate to. Training with/against weapons somehow leads to give more...or reminds about the seriousness of the situation. Btw...you mean he tapped you if you looked absent minded or what? I didn't exactly follow.
ha ha the taps... that doesn't happen often. mainly stuff like, if he keeps talking about a leg that shouldn't be out or something, he'll tap it with a wooden sword if he keeps seeing it in the wrong place to remind us why it shouldn't be there, etc.
it's not painful or anything.
I guess admonishment for absent-mindedness could be a component, but I think it's more a method of helping us remember "why" we do things.
also, and this is more light-hearted, if he thinks we're being lazy and he knows we can give more - he lets us know.
