Punching with angry eyes

Postby dmattwads » Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:27 pm

In the "Punching with angry eyes" piece of the 8 Brocades do you punch fast or slow, and are you supposed to use a lot of tension in your punching arm?

My limited understanding...

For this piece, the extension of the arm should be relaxed yet controlled; similar to the movement in the drawing the bow piece. In terms of speed, I normally exhale in a relaxed (not too slow, definitely not fast) way and I coordinate the arms extension with the exhalation, so that the arm is fully extended at the peak of the exhale. At the very peak of the arms extension is when the fist should be tightly clenched; up until that point you should be as relaxed as possible. To get a better sense of what you should be doing, check out the DVD by Dr. Yang.
