Wind energy? pathogenic?

Postby fazhou » Mon Feb 21, 2011 4:42 am

Hello all. I have a question that I hope can be answered. I live Guam, a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I practice Taijiquan and some standing meditation and often times find myself practicing on the beach. More often than not, there is a breeze coming off the ocean. I have read somewhere that TCM considers wind to be a pathogen. Can someone elaborate? What would be the implications of "borrowing" wind energy for my Tai Chi and Qigong practice similar to what Ramel Rones does with the sun? Bad idea? Ineffectual? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

This is an embryonic breathing thin. You draw in power from the surrounding to your centre and use it to nourish the bone marrow from their.
I hadn't heard wind before but I had heard moon and tree among others. You draw power to your centre (dantian) from your point in your hands and feet. Its intent and reverse breathing. You are drawing through the centre of your bones and then then you release and it expands up to the skin from your bones. Or you can bring it to your centre and compress it for storage or you can bring it to your centre and expand it as guardian Qi or you can circulate it through microcosmic orbit once you have stored a bit.

Lol not that I practice like I should

I tend to like doing this in a standing posture.

If the wind is too strong then your body winds up having to utilize more wei qi while you practice - if your practice is aimed at core, you dont want to diminish the efficacy of the practice. Light wind is ok but wear something unless its just a breeze.

Of course you may "extract a little" energy from the wind, but by and large the wind is too...I am not sure of the word. The sun is nice and intense and you mainly extract heat, whereas wind extracts heat from you! Most of these practices you will be generating heat, so having a strong natural presence that takes away heat basically leads to hot, open, but then wind drains superficial heat and makes it cold right next to hot/open and you can catch a chill that way.

Wind is only a pathogen is it is cold or damp.

The sun is an abundant source of energy. The moon reflects about a third of the sun's energy at most.

The wind, not so much.

Thank you all for the replies. The wind here is neither cold or damp. I understand where you're coming from about the Sun Dvivid. My main concern was making myself sick. So, if that is not an issue I think i'm ok with what i'm practicing now. Thanks again to all.

I dont know what exactly is mean with wind being a "pathogen". However, my Qi Gong Sifu said that one should not practice Qi Gong in the wind, because it interferes with your Yi's intention (by blowing on your skin and distracting you). I tried doing Qi Gong in the wind once and found it really distracting.

They are not talking about wind as we know it.
A wind condition is charactized by a sudden appearance of a malady without warning and it is usually acute. It MAY be preceded by (actual)wind (cold) where you went outside without the proper clothing and within a few hours experienced a chill, sore throat, or some upper respiratory condition.

I was searching about wind energy systems (as in wind power, windmills, wind turbines, etc) and got to this site.

It says "Wind energy" right, but it is like a different world here. Tai Chi, im not very familiar with but I think I have seen it practiced before.

This, I am more familiar with, as in I am an advocate of renewable energy (ie. solar, wind generator plans, etc). But if i am not mistaken, your martial arts, is also about maximizing your energy, right?

Rather than maximizing, its about maintain energy balance, while very gradually increasing the amount of energy your body can store and circulate.

We are solar-powered beings.

Of course, 'maximizing' may be taken a couple different ways - we usually think amplitude, but including D's suggestion, one can also consider the maximizing of 'flux' - and in more than a single definition of that term, too :)

Fazhou

As per TCM ( traditional chinese medicine ), the excess of wind can be pathogenic. The reason is the following: as per 5 elements theory of TCM, wind is related to: wood, spring, liver, wind, east, shout, eyes....and many more. So it is very clear that excess of wind may affect the liver for instance, on the other hand someone that feels disturbed with the wind may have some problem in the liver.

I tried only to give a simple view, but the matter is much more complex and is very well explained within TCM frame.

Let's break this down to the basics. When we practice Qigong and Taiji we become in tune with ourselves. We feel what is going on within our bodies and what is going on around us.
We are aware and sensitive.
While you are practicing ask yourself...does this feel good? Are my surroundings or my environment a distraction? If so, then don't do it then and there. The classics and the principles are there to help you as guideposts, not unbrakeable rules. Our art is based on our ability to be sensitive to the energies within us and around us. The old Masters tried to help us with poems, classics and principles because they knew it was a very difficult thing to explain. If you watch an accupuncturist or a qigong healer you can see how much they depend on their sense of feeling. Your own practice is very personal to you. Use the same tools as the pros...feel.
