8 Pieces of Brocade -- Wise Owl, Seven Disorders

Postby pilotfish » Tue Nov 15, 2011 11:32 am

In this form (correct term?), the 4th and 8th exercises each practice each repeat movements in 3 overall positions:
- hands on hips
- hands on kidneys
- hands in front, palms up, elbows up

In general, I understand the physiological purpose of the movement as described by Dr Yang. E.g., in Wise Owl, turn the head so that the muscles and tissues in the front of the torso, under the ribs, are stretched. I try to do it so that when I turn to the left, I feel them stretch from the right side of my neck down and across to my right hip.

Changing hand position from hips to kidneys produces a slightly different feel that I can track as I do it.

What is the purpose of the third hand position, palms up in front?

When you have your hands on the kidneys, you are flexing the chest and stretching the front of the body; so the Qi is more abundant in the back.

When you have your hands in front of you, embracing the tree, you are stretching the back, and Qi is more abundant in the front.
