Need help choosing Qi Gong

Postby caesar » Wed Feb 29, 2012 2:13 am

Hi,

since I started in a taiji new school...it seems from Qi Gong department only Zhang Zhuang is taught and practiced. I enjoy it and feel the benefits.

I still would like to learn some "moving qi gong" and there are a couple of courses coming up pretty soon in my neighborhood which have caught my attention. I would like to just go ahead and give them all a try, but for financial reasons I must make choice between which courses to attend...or/and...ordering Dr. Yang's "The Eight Brocade"s or "Shaolin White Crane Hard and Soft Qi Gong."

I'm keen on ordering the two DVD's, but not sure which one first...and I so often hear that it's better to learn from a teacher (in real life), so I'm interested in the courses, but I'm not really sure which Qi Gong are they exactly...could someone help me with this?

The first one on my mind comes from a group called "Zhineng Qigong Center"
http://www.zhinengqigong.eu/
Anyone familiar with this?

The second one comes from a teacher who's main art is baji, but also teaching taiji, bagua and xingyi. I tried to ask questions but with no luck...but here's a video of them performing some Qi Gong...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpvMd4ss ... r_embedded
Is this close to anything you've done?

I'm not so familiar with the differences between different Qi Gong...I don't know what is White Crane Qi Gong...and is only the soft side supposed to be trained with taiji...and is it better to get to know the "Eight Brocade's" first.

so many choices...

I would't consider baduanjin as moving qigong. Though I dislike the word (qigong) I am trying to incorporate it so people will know what I am talking about!
Dayan Method, Hexiangzhuang, etc fits into the Moving Qigong Schema. Even taijiquan as yangshenggong based on jingqishen concepts (perhaps Wu, Sun and Yang style) is part of moving qigong, relatively speaking.
Does one need moving qigong? No. Because if one looks at some 'older' Yang style, neigong concepts are contained in the routines so they use the 1 to contain the multitude (of neigong systems out there)

Here is an example of what I would consider an "old Yang style' containing neigong principles:

Yes, sorry for the typo. Wrote it in a hurry. I changed to a School teaching Tung style a while ago...

But anyway...thank you for help Yeniseri but I got a little confused since I'm not familiar with the terms "Dayan Method, Hexiangzhuang"...but apparently these are to your opinion considered as moving qi gong? Perhaps I should read some history then to understand better what I'm asking and what you just replied...

As "moving qi gong" I referred to Qi Gong practice opposite to zhang zhuang where one is still...should I have asked about help for Neigong or simply Qi Gong then if moving Qi Gong was not a good term?

Ok...this I can perhaps understand because I often hear that taijiquan can be stated as a branch of qi gong (but martial of course.) But I've also understood that if one wants to deeper the understanding of TJQ, additional Qi Gong / Nei Gong is recommended and perhaps this is what I'm looking for and why I asked those questions before...

I asked more to understand the teacher you are learning from. Tung, I know of a bit, but not of the style.

For most people, standing is more than enough work. Any monkey can do the movements of a "moving qigong", but that does not mean that they are doing qigong. There are so many subtleties that make it impossible for a new student to get anything out of a moving qigong, if they cant get anything out of a standing qigong.

My teacher said that if standing qigong bores you, then you dont know how to do it properly. Turns out, he was right! I used to HATE standing. Turns out, i was off by fractions of an inch in a few places.

Maybe, if you are not liking standing so much, you either need to see your teacher for correction of your existing posture (note, i did not say to get MORE postures - but, depending on the issue, that could be required as well), or to find a new teacher that CAN teach proper standing.

good luck. Qigong is not an easy thing to do or learn.

Baduanjin (Eight Brocades) is stationary, but it is an amazing set that I highly recommend to any serious qigong student, not only at the start of your qigong, but also it is great to revisit regularly.

As you learn to use embryonic breathing, or 4 gates circulation, you can get much deeper into a simple set like Eighht Brocades.

For balance and general health, it is def good to also practice something with stepping, like Taiji.

Qigong is not really very hard to learn nowadays, thanks to the wealth of learning materials and growing number of qigong teachers and classes nowadays, as compared to even a decade ago.

Alright...thanks wpgtaiji and Dvivid.

BTW, wpgtaiji...I do enjoy standing practice and find it beneficial as I said in my first post (and I'm also sure there's a lot to fix with my posture). I'm just thinking what more I could do to improve. But anyway...

I asked more to understand the teacher you are learning from. Tung, I know of a bit, but not of the style.

My teacher(s) are disciplines of Tung Kai Ying and his son Chen Wei Tung.

Ok...I think you convinced me to order the DVD, it's been in my interest for a while...Although I do have a small fear of starting it on my own without a real teacher...that's why I guess I wanted to get opinions about those links...perhaps especially about the youtube link...

dont be so quick as to knock what a hardcore zhan zhuang regimen can do for you ;) I've known a few people who did just that and obtained pretty surprising results. besides, so much one can focus on even just being still and standing! integrate, integrate, integreat! good to train reverse breathing.

move around, stay limber...whether through taiji, qigong, yoga, what is more important is that the function is being served. train, we must!
