The Rise of Medical Qi Gong

Postby Sorcerer » Thu Jul 04, 2013 3:25 pm

It appears by what Ive seen that most Western interpretations of Qi Gong reduce the practice to something medical. I wanted to ask what peoples thoughts are about this? I guess its the most effective way to market the art.

Actually, medical qigong is traditionally the root of detailed qigong theory, going back to the compilation of the five animal frolics 2,000 years ago.

Whilst all Qi Gong has medical benefits Dr Yang writes that some styles are more spiritual and others scholarly and others again medical. I would also be hesitant to say that the Chinese conception of health is the same as the Western, its debatable what health is...

health is the smooth running of systems. systems may or may not exhibit issues that can potentially cause failure. that is the root of the concept of health differing.

more spiritual, think of the nature of mind that buddhist teachings speak of...

scholarly is usually those interested in internal alchemy that dont reach the high levels of it,

medical is assisting others, wei qi liao fa and such.

if the root of disease is the not so smooth functioning of the organs and systems, being able to affect them is practicing the art...

marketing? lol.
Even in mildly complex systems, any outcome is the wrong thing to target, with the process being where the focus should be.

No doubt Medical Qigong exists but it has rarely been the present description that so many have re-engineered so so give the appearance of a snake when it is just a blade of wheat blowing in the wind. Yes, many of the routines have a shamanic origin and have been around for a long time but I know of no actual medical qigong (in past history) that has cured diseases.

What do we actual ymean by curing diseases using medical qigong?
I acknowledge that what is called medical qigong today is therapeutic, restorative, and beneficial but I think the medical aspect demeans the actual gong (frequency/intensity and duration)associated with beneficial activity.
