How do I know if i'm doing it right?

Postby justadude » Wed Feb 12, 2014 11:40 pm

Hey how's it going. I've been studying qigong and taichi chuan out of Dr. Yang's books, DVD's and other books from other authors for several years and have been practicing yang style tai chi chuan with an instructor for about two years now. I have noticed quite a few changes and benefits from the tai chi classes but I have not noticed any of the phenomenon that the books, DVD's, and others on this forum have described. Phenomenon like an electric current, or a pulsing in the guts, etc. So my question is this, Am I doing it wrong, and the not feeling is proof of doing it wrong? or Am I doing it right and the phenominon is just so people don't get distracted from the practice itself? Has anyone else dealt with this as an issue? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

99% of people go through this same experience.

Dr. Yang always jokes that people spend years practicing, saying "Where's my Qi? Where's my Qi!?"

It depends upon many factors.

1. You have to relieve muscular tension in the body. If you're not flexible, especially through the upper back and shoulders, that tension will stagnate your circulation, and you won't feel much.

2. You have to relax very deeply, and develop your meditation. If your mind is not very calm, and you can't effectively turn your attention inward, you won't feel much.

3. You have to practice. A lot. Just go through the motions of training the four gates: inhale and concentrate your mind in the center of the abdomen. Exhale and lead your mind beyond the hands and feet. Do this during your qigong, your tai chi, and also: all day, every day.

With the above, you'll feel it.

Don't *expect* a certain kind of feeling of energy. Just pay attention to what is actually happening.

Hope this helps,
David

Thanks man, I greatly appreciate the feedback. I'll keep these points in mind as I train.
