Compare martial arts

Postby Phalanxpursos » Sun May 27, 2007 4:20 pm

Greetings forum for Sparring & Fighting.

For as long as I can remember people have always compared different forms of martial arts to each other and thereby estimate which one is better, but now I make the comparison "what is more important than martial arts." For me it is not really a question because the answer is clear to see, moral values & civic virtues are more important than martial arts. Morality & virtues show us the way of preventing a fight and not ending one, but I am convinced this would be called Martial Morality. So Martial Morality should refer to the concept of 'how to prevent a fight', Martial Arts should refer to the concept of 'how to end a fight'.

Personally I conclude that Martial Morality is more important than Martial Arts.

I agree, and this is of course also a principle of T'ai Chi but even the best Masters of external styles would also agree with this, too. Kind regards, T.

hello everyone,
Phalanxpursos, very good indeed.
If you look at the word for martial arts, or martial techniques, you see it is made up of words which actually stand for stopping, ceasing, or ending weapons. This is the most fundamental philosophy of Chinese martial arts.

Martial Morality, or Wude as it is called in Chinese, is considered the most important part of training in Chinese martial arts. It consists of two aspects and has been the most important criterion for judging students among teachers of ancient times. ( of course I am sure I do not need to write them here as they are ingrained in us all here at YMAA, Right guys? :) ) In any case, The morality of deed can certainly apply to your thought process of preventing or avoiding a fight. The highest level of fighting is no fight. It takes a great amount of Martial morality to to achieve this.

Take care,
Dave

Wude is very important. I wouldn't even bother learning at one of those mcdojos where all they teach is how to beat people up. I'm sick of those places popping up on every street.
Anything goes.
