After training food

Postby Sorcerer » Thu Jun 09, 2011 8:27 pm

What do people here do to recover from training? I used to have proteiun shakes but am somewhat wary of the stuff now. It seems so chemical and artificial. Anyone recommend any good snacks to eat quickly after training, for the body to recover?

some brown rice and chicken. That has carbs and protein. A medium size serving after I have cooled down works for me. Probably not the best for wait loss but it seems to replace the energy I have used and protein aids recovery and muscle growth.

Are there any good and HEALTHY powershakes or something of the source generally available? Chicken and risce sounds good but I have to commute for an hour after training and need something in my system within 30min to recover effectively.

Blender, milk, banana, ginger and honey. Mix and drink. You could have some bottled if kept refrigerated. Ginger is grate for revival as is the honey. Bananas are also good for that and milk has protein and fat.

Id cut the honey - too much sugar and add something that is a stronger protein, though I wouldnt know what.

Home made smoothies and milkshakes are a good idea but trouble with making them too far in advance is that they will separate and oxidise which isn't very pleasant to drink. Silken tofu can be added to a smoothie to add protein although carbs are really what you need straight after training, the protein can wait until you get home. Chicken or Tuna are good. How are you travelling?

Subway. So yeah, Ill give smoothies a try - good idea. Perhaps I will get some (healthy!) protein powder at a health food store and add that to a smoothie made of bananas, strawberries milk and oats (what I generally have for breakfast).

post workout drink...

Postby nitsuj » Mon Jun 27, 2011 10:06 pm

easy... I do a hand-full of almonds and a big glass of chocolate milk, usually fortified chocolate soy milk. If it was an intense workout, I'll do a goo (gel) too.

There really isn't anything strange about the study at all: very simple stuff done in very simple ways.
Also, there are a number of resources that confirm that chocolate milk is a great (some say perfect) post- workout drink. Think about it--- a pint of low-fat c.milk has roughly 300 calories. 40 are from fat--- making up less than 10% of daily fat needs. So it isn't "unhealthy" in terms of fat content. It provides almost 50 g of carbs in the form of sugar--- no fiber. This means that the sugars are readily available to provide energy for muscle repair. Protein comes in usually around 20g--- which is a healthy dose. AND THE KEY TO GOOD REFUELING IS A SPECIFIC CARB TO PROTEIN RATIO, WHICH CHOCOLATE MILK NAILS ALMOST EXACTLY!
It is low in cholesterol and sodium as well.
Not only that, but it usually has high levels of both calcium and vitamin D.
You don't gain much more by drinking the whole milk version, besides more fat.
SO, unless you are lactose intolerant, there isn't really much that is "unhealthy" about chocolate milk.

Is there any particular chocolate milk you can recommend? What about Nesquick powder :P

buy local

If YOU think it is unhealthy, just find something else... you might end up giving yourself an ulcer otherwise. Stick to your powders and shakes--- help support the economy.

Sory nitsuj - I was not being rude! I was honestly just kidding. I tend to get a lot of endorphines in my system after training ;) Apologies if I seemed rude.

I will give chocolate milk a try.

Have you guys heard of this stuff?

I dont think I believe in all these chemical concoctions. I am also not a competitive athlete or any of that stuff so I wouldnt see why I would personally have a reason to buy this stuff, but what do people here make of it?

Hemp Shakes

Postby Virochana » Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:42 pm

Hemp powder mixed blended with frozen blueberries, chocalate powder, and some almond butter. This will keep better in a small thermos or glass jar than a banana based smoothie. The hemp is 35 to 50% protein and digests very easily and is much better than soy isolates.

Nutiva makes good ones available from amazon, some of the flavored ones are great. They also make small packets that you can take with you and mix on the spot.

Another idea is spirolina mixed with sunflower seeds - grind the sunflower seeds in a coffee powder. This is high protien, lots of minerals (just as important), and goes in the system quickly. The spirolilna on its own is too yin, but the sunflower seeds help to balance it and give it more taste. This wil substain you to you get home, and it is nourishing but light enough not to intefere with the continued chi flows that need an hour or so.
