Everyone's physiology is slightly (or sometimes extremely) different.
For most of us, closing the mouth works to get the tongue in position, but others need to search just behind the two front teeth for the most sensitive spot. That's the place you're looking for.
If your tongue is curled back at all, you've gone too far. But for some, straight up in the soft palate is the spot.

Or is there different points in the mouth which are better for certain purposes? If so what are they called and what are each of there purposes (advantages and disadvantages)? Where can I go for reliable information or what book can I refer to to understand where to place the tongue and why. What is the theory behind placing the tongue at these various places?
