mate, you are going to die! Having your tongue up all the time?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

ok, now that i got that off my chest. There is no problems at all mate. (I was joking with you). I have never had any apparatus, and yet my tongue has been in position for decades.

Definitely, you need to find a YMAA teacher to teach you 8 brocades. It will help you out a lot.

Sometimes sarcasm doesnt come across very well via ASCII

It is a good habit especially if you are doing cultivation exercises. No worries. :)

It has always been my assumption that the tip of the tongue is supposed to be LIGHTLY touching both the front teeth AND the gum line. Having your tongue pressing against the ROOF of the mouth is a NO NO.

I agree...and this is achieved when you just shut your mouth in the normal fashion....no magic..no searching for a special point...it just happens!

Only one concern: people with high blood pressure should NOT touch the tongue to the roof of the mouth, and should instead touch just behind the BOTTOM two front teeth.

Everyone's physiology is slightly (or sometimes extremely) different.

For most of us, closing the mouth works to get the tongue in position, but others need to search just behind the two front teeth for the most sensitive spot. That's the place you're looking for.

If your tongue is curled back at all, you've gone too far. But for some, straight up in the soft palate is the spot.

Erle has always taught (and it is the way i assumed people would be doing it.. never assume!) is to say the letter "L". Where the tongue touches is the spot.

Thank god we havent even brought up placing the tongue on the lower spot! (NO, i did NOT just start that! )

I am a bit confused, Dr. Yang teaches to put the tip of the tongue to the roof of the mouth..... so where are you supposed to place the tongue for small circulation? Or is there different points in the mouth which are better for certain purposes? If so what are they called and what are each of there purposes (advantages and disadvantages)? Where can I go for reliable information or what book can I refer to to understand where to place the tongue and why. What is the theory behind placing the tongue at these various places?

There are alot of things that I have heard and many seem so absurd but I think the best process is be natural in whatever you do. Anything 'contrived' never ends up working as it should.

Your confusion is understandable! When i read Dr Yang's stuff, it sounds like that. But let's look at it from an honest perspective.

If one places the tip of the tongue on the TOP of the mouth, how does it feel? You are actually creating TENSION by doing that! Tension BLOCKS qi flow. So, this method cannot be correct.

Like i put previous, Erle taught that the tongue touches the upper mouth at the point where it touches when you say the letter "L". For me, it falls just above the front teeth. Because it is so natural, i keep it there almost all the time (it is natural so i dont pay attention!).

In taiji, there is this misunderstanding of "Relax". The actual word is SONG. The best way i have heard it is "to move without feeling the movement". This applies to ALL aspects, of which the tongue is a part. If you are aware of your tongue, then you arent doing it correctly! How many of us pay attention to where the tongue is when saying words? LOL

Hope that helps

Damo Mitchell defines 'Song' as:

The process of transferring habitual tension from the physical or conscious body into the energetic realm where it can be dissolved.

Personally I find that saying the word itself can become a trigger into the process it refers to. It has that kind of sound quality for me. :D

I was taught to place the tongue back just a bit, where the roof of the mouth starts to get soft.

Not only is this good for the qigong, but it prevents swallowing teeth that are knocked out if that happens and keeps the tongue back just far enough from the teeth that a heavy blow to the teeth and jaw will not shred or harm the tongue.

Different positions have different energetic effects. Just behind the upper teeth focuses on the small circulation loop - wiggle your tongue back and forth there lightly, feel @yintang. Top of the mouth is slightly different and reflects the loop pattern in that old drawing in taoist yoga a little more. Way back, kechari mudra, focuses on the ni wan. The below teeth will focus a little more on the lower salivary ducts. None are harmful, the small amount of tension would really only make a difference if you were going deeply enough so as to do longevity breathing where every last little attenuation matters - e.g. too much energetic consumption from the tongue tends to stimulate the hypoglossal cranial nerve...so things that stimulate the cranial nerves necessarily prevent you from going extremely deeply in meditation, too many signals generated.
Even in mildly complex systems, any outcome is the wrong thing to target, with the process being where the focus should be.
