In general, your saber length should be from the floor to your solar plexus area. If you can master the saber, you will have 70% of the technique needed for many other short weapons.

Training with the Gun, or staff, develops the fundamental skills required for all other long weapons training, and it is traditionally the first long weapon learned in Chinese martial arts. If you can master the staff, you will have 70% of the technique needed for many other long weapons. Staff length can be anywhere from the floor to eyebrow height, to much longer, depending upon the style. These techniques can also be used with a bo staff in Japanese or Okinawan martial arts.
