SELF-DEFENSE TACTICS

Self-Defense Law and Recovering Under Overwhelming Force
YMAA Boston, Jamaica Plain, MA - August 12th, 2011, 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Rory Miller will give some unique, firsthand insight into the world of practical, effective self-defense. In this seminar, he will be discussing Self-Defense Law and Recovering From Overwhelming Force. Rory also has some new material on the Logic of Violence that he would like to share in this workshop. Rory has over 2 decades worth of experience in various highly qualified positions, including corrections officer, sergeant, security guard, tactical leader, and Combat Medic in the National Guard.

SEMINAR/WORKSHOP PROGRAM

Rory will review:
  • Self-Defense Law
Self-defense within the confines of the law is crucial to maintaining reasonable boundaries and limitations to your actions. It is important to know when an act of self-defense may cross the line, morally and defensively. Rory will give you an idea of what signs to look out for before taking certain actions. For every action, there will be a consequence.
  • Recovering Under Overwhelming Force
What should you do if your attacker is much more physically stronger and bigger than you? Rory will address strategies and practical solutions to effectively dealing with such less-than-ideal situations. This is particularly helpful for young kids and teens who might need to defend themselves against adult assailants, and for Women's Self-Defense.
  • Additional Topics
If time permits, Rory will be available to address any specific questions or scenarios that you may have in mind, including Environmental and Ground Fighting, Logic of Violence, and Conflict Communications.

WHO'S TEACHING?

YMAA author Rory Miller served for seventeen years as a corrections officer and sergeant working maximum security, booking and mental health. He was also a leader of a tactical team. He teaches subjects ranging from Defensive Tactics and Use of Force, to First Aid and Crisis Communications with the Mentally Ill. For fourteen months he was an advisor to the Iraqi Corrections System working in Baghdad and Kurdish Sulaymaniyah. He is the author of the widely-acclaimed book Meditations on Violence.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This seminar will benefit:
  • Anybody who's ever wondered about how martial arts training translates into real-world situations.
  • Anybody who wants to know about how to defend themselves.
  • Anybody who wants to learn how to deal with and recover from physically and mentally tougher opponents.
  • Anybody who would like to meet Rory and ask him questions, opinions about specific topics and situations, and to ask about his past experiences.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

We recommend wearing loose practice clothing (T-shirt and pants) and a pair of indoor shoes, unless you prefer training barefoot or in socks. Street shoes are not permitted on the training floor.

A good alternative is to use the MBTA subway transportation system. YMAA Boston is about a 3-minute walk from the Forest Hill Orange Line station. Visit MBTA website for more information.

If you are flying to Boston, you can use the MBTA subway system to get to YMAA instead of by taxi. After arriving at Boston’s Logan Airport take the free airport shuttle bus (Route #22, #33 or #55) to the MBTA ("T") Airport station. Take the Inbound Blue Line train to State station. At State station board the Orange Line outbound train to Forest Hills station. At the Forest Hills station go upstairs and proceed straight to exit the terminal on the Hyde Park Avenue side. Once outside and at the top of the landing, turn right, proceed downstairs, walk to the intersection, cross the street, and walk 2 blocks right to YMAA Boston.
