TUMBLING FOR ADULTS
Fun Crash-Course in Tumbling Basics and Spotting MethodsYMAA Boston, Jamaica Plain, MA - March 31st, 2012, 2:00pm - 5:00pm
SEMINAR/WORKSHOP PROGRAM
Tumbling will help you build confidence in your physical ability and body control. It is especially important in martial arts training for knowing how to fall without getting hurt, and recovering gracefully. Tumbling opens a whole new world of ways to move and maneuver your body while on the ground or in the air. Learn how you can move your body in ways you may have never thought possible!
In the first part of this seminar, Heidi will be teaching the essential basics of tumbling: fundamental concepts, what to look out for, basic conditioning, supporting your body properly, good alignment structure, strategies for learning and training, and how to avoid injuries.
In the second part of the seminar, Heidi will be reviewing methods to spot each other, that is, ways that a partner can help physically hold, support, and guide you through a drill so that you don't get hurt. Spotting somebody is like providing training wheels. This is especially important for more advanced techniques that students may eventually want to learn and train, such as flips, hand springs, and aerial cartwheels.
WHO'S TEACHING?
Heidi Butler competed in high school varsity gymnastics and was fortunate enough to receive an athletic scholarship to Northeastern University, where she competed for 4 years. Upon graduating with an undergraduate degree in Recreation Management, she began running a gymnastics program for the City of Boston in 1984. After 24 years at the Ohrenberger Community Center, the gymnastics program is still going strong! In 1991, Heidi earned a master's degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology and became a certified Health/Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine.WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This seminar will benefit:- Those who have never tumbled before.
- Those who want to be comfortable with being on the ground and moving on the ground.
- Those interested learning how to gain a better sense of balance on their hands as well as their feet, standing upright and upside down.
- Those who want to have some fun!
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
We recommend wearing loose practice clothing (T-shirt and pants) and a pair of indoor shoes, unless you prefer training barefoot or in socks. Street shoes are not permitted on the training floor.TRAVELING TO BOSTON
YMAA Boston is located approximately 20 minutes South of downtown Boston. If you are traveling by car please visit YMAA Boston webpage for detailed driving instructions.Free on-street parking is available and there are several paid lots nearby.
A good alternative is to use the MBTA subway transportation system. YMAA Boston is about a 3-minute walk from the Forest Hill Orange Line station. Visit MBTA website for more information.
If you are flying to Boston, you can use the MBTA subway system to get to YMAA instead of by taxi. After arriving at Boston’s Logan Airport take the free airport shuttle bus (Route #22, #33 or #55) to the MBTA ("T") Airport station. Take the Inbound Blue Line train to State station. At State station board the Orange Line outbound train to Forest Hills station. At the Forest Hills station go upstairs and proceed straight to exit the terminal on the Hyde Park Avenue side. Once outside and at the top of the landing, turn right, proceed downstairs, walk to the intersection, cross the street, and walk 2 blocks right to YMAA Boston. We are right across the Forest Hills parking lot.
